A Case Study
This business case study examines the successful definition, design, manufacturing and implementation of an advanced lithium-ion battery solution by Inno, aimed at improving the performance and user experience of a cordless household appliance. The solution addresses key challenges faced by the former battery solution and enhanced the overall efficiency, reliability, and user-friendliness of the application.
In response to the evolving needs of this type of cordless household appliance market, Inno has developed a new battery solution that offers improved performance, enhanced efficiency, and a lighter weight compared to the original battery solution.
This type of cordless household appliances has gained immense popularity due to their convenience and versatility. However, they often face limitations such as limited battery life, smaller capacity, and reduced power. Recognising the need for a battery that could offer extended runtime, faster charging, and improved safety features, Inno embarked on developing an advanced lithium-ion battery solution.
Lifecycle based development
The development was based on the Lifecycle model, ensuring the development of an innovative battery solution. We worked together with our customers to understand their requirements, including critical battery functions, scope of delivery, and specifications. Through simulations and careful evaluation, we determined the most suitable battery chemistry, life cycle, size, commercially viable price, and environmental profile for the battery solution.
Based on the defined specifications, we designed the battery solution and chose the best-suited Battery Management System (BMS) technology. Every detail, from the mechanical structure to safety features, weight optimisation, and desired shape, was carefully considered to ensure a durable, safe, and high-performing battery system.
To ensure the reliability and efficiency of the battery system, we employed an efficient prototyping method.
Requirement of Cordless Household Appliance Batteries
The battery plays a critical role in the performance of this type of cordless household appliance. Inno identified several essential requirements for an ideal battery, including high energy density, fast charging speed, long cycle life, and a reliable safety system:
High energy density
The developed battery solution exhibits superior energy storage capabilities, providing a higher energy-to-weight and energy-to-volume ratio. This enables longer operating times and supports stronger suction power for efficient cleaning.
Fast charging speed
The rapid charging capabilities of the battery solution significantly reduced charging time, allowing users to minimise downtime between cleaning sessions and enhancing overall productivity.
Long cycle life
The chosen chemistry was designed to withstand numerous charge-discharge cycles without significant capacity or performance degradation. This extended cycle life ensured prolonged battery durability and minimised need for frequent replacements.
Low self-discharge rate
the developed solution features a low self-discharge rate, meaning the battery retains its charge for longer periods of inactivity. This ensures that the cordless household appliance remains ready for immediate use whenever required, without the need for recharging.
Built-in protection system
Equipped with a comprehensive protection board, the battery actively monitors and regulates critical battery parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge. This advanced safety system ensures the safe operation of the battery pack, mitigating the risk of overheating, overcharging, over-discharging, short-circuiting, or fire hazards.
